A mountain goat study in Glacier National Park has been suspended following the deaths of two goats after they were shot with tranquilizer darts. The University of Montana study, aimed at exploring the effects of climate change on mountain goats, got under way this month with preliminary field work in the Many Glacier Valley.

Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. Therefore, apologies in advance for the largish number of mammal photos in this post. Blue Sheep. At least they are cute.

When there are no animals around to sit on, Cattle Egrets sometimes sit on trees, even though they frequently b h about the trees’ low speed and inability to stir up insects. John Darnielle (of Mountain Goats fame), should you read this, feel free to add a comment that this post would have been much better without most of the words.

Whenever one thinks about Yellowstone, the first though for the majority of folks is probably the animals. The Rocky Mountain Goats were the same thing, saw them, got a shot, but from 800 yards away, it really isn’t much to write home about. Here are the rest of the animals that we did see.

One of the established ways to evaluate self-cognition in animals (including humans) is the mirror test. In the classic test, an animal is anesthetized and then marked on an area of the body the animal cannot normally see. When the animal recovers from the anesthetic, it is given access to a mirror. Back to real birds.
