In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. Not from an environmental perspective but from a “don’t you like animals?”
Almost every single outdoor pet cat, feral cat, or stray kills other animals , no matter how well fed the cat is through other sources. Trap-neuter-release programs sound nice and let folks think that they are doing good but they actually often add to the problem , and never reach the goal of zero feral cats in an area.
They might also have the misconception that pets are shelters might be there because there was a problem with the animal. In fact, most pets end up in shelters not because of any problem pet behavior, but because an owner died, moved, or simply didn’t have the time or money to care for the animal.

They have been so successful in suckering cities and other municipalities into believing that they can solve their feral cat problems through Trap-Neuter-Return (T-N-R) that now citizens of those towns have had their eyes (and their noses) opened to what happens when the inmates run the asylum. It may feel threatened, and animals that feel threatened instinctually protect themselves. Another option is to call your local Human Society or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also known as the SPCA. There are programs that exist that make costly vaccines and spaying/neutering affordable. •
