These are all excellent organizations created to help wild animals live healthy lives in healthy habitats at home and around the world. Or maybe something closer to home like the American Bird Conservancy or a wildlife rescue organization like the Marine Mammal Center or International Bird Rescue.
Dear Senator Murray, I have read articles in the NewYorkTimes and the Los Angeles Times about the chimpanzees at Holloman Air Force Base. These highly intelligent animals should be PERMANENTLY retired and a PERMANENT sanctuary created for them. They deserve better and we are capable of providing them with better.

To the Editor: I appreciate Nicolette Hahn Niman’s efforts in raising awareness about the conditions in which pigs are raised (“ Pig Out ,” Op-Ed, March 14), but I was struck by her comment that it is incumbent on us to ensure that animals have decent lives because we ask them to make the ultimate sacrifice for us. They don’t volunteer.
Bullfighting is simply prolonged animal torture. Most children start life with a love and reverence of animals. In this country, this lesson is usually less direct: that it is somehow logical to teach kids to love and respect animals while feeding them animals that have been raised and slaughtered in genuinely terrible conditions.
If there were transparency to the public spectacle of bull riding, it would be clear that this is a frantically scared animal desperately trying to escape. The use of animals in entertainment when animal cruelty is involved is deplorable, whether it is dog fighting or bull riding.

The exploitation of farm workers reverberates in the treatment of farm animals and degradation of the environment. NewYork’s protection of laborers should be a first step toward recognition of the other systemic abuses that occur on farms that, like the long-ignored rights of farm workers, have been constantly disregarded by legislators.
The animals are forced to fight through beatings, starvation, being thrown at each other, being made to attack smaller animals thrown at them, and worse. The Westchester chapter of the league is calling on the county executive, Andrew J. Spano, and the mayor of Yonkers, Philip A.
