Their scientific name is Theropithecus gelada, the former word meaning “beast-ape” in Greek. These experiences were the highlight of my trip to Ethiopia and one of the most fascinating and enjoyable encounters I have ever had the privilege to experience in many years of wildlife watching. I do not claim to have the answer, but I think it is certainly worthwhile to raise the question: Why, exactly, all over the civilized world, in virtually every major city, are apes in prison? The natural experiment must have been tried very infrequently, at least recently.
