We had been birding the north-west side of Argentina for 7 days and drove more than 3,000 km. This was the first part of our birding trip to Argentina and it was coming to an end. The drive back to Tucuman was uneventful and thanks to our trusty GPS we were never lost for very long.

Gulls in Argentina have learned to land on Southern Right Whales as the whales come to the surface to breathe. The gulls then peck at the whales’ backs, causing wounds from which the gulls feed. The solution? Kill the gulls. There has to be a better way to deal with this, no?
They breed on a number of basaltic lakes in southwestern Argentina, and it is not entirely clear where they all winter, but some wintering Hooded Grebes have been found outside their breeding range (and a few none-breeding birds have been found year round at two locations on the Atlantic, apparently).
This phoebe is a fixture in the American Southwest and Central America and can be spotted all the way down to Argentina. It is spring in Argentina. This brood of three Chalk-browed Mockingbirds were waiting for a parent to return with food in the Costanera Sur Reserve by the Rio Plata in Buenos Aires. In any case, screech-owls are birds of the Megascops genus, small nocturnal owls found in wooded habitats from southern Alaska to northern Argentina. I suppose that sounds better than “tremulous”, “modulating”, or “little hooting” owls even if any of those names would be more accurate.

Once at home, I looked at Wildfowl by Steve Madge and Hilary Burn, to quickly discover that I was watching the Chiloe Wigeon , indigenous to Chile and Argentina. (I also digiscoped a few lousy photos.) Well, an escapee it may be, but still something totally new and challenging (also, a first for Serbia).
This is partly because it leaves at such high elevations (11,811 – 15,090 feet above sea level) along the high Andes of Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. The Andean Avocet is not a rare bird, but not a lot of folks have seen it. Andean Avocet. Photo: Till Nierman.
