This form is thought to be a different species and the name Golden-bellied Woodpecker has been adopted by some. The individuals in this gallery were found at Reserva Ecologica Costanera Sur in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the southern part of their range, they sport a golden yellow on breast and belly.

(Someday I will get up the nerve to write about the ten, yes, TEN Empidonax species I believe I have seen in my little corner of Mexico. Many of these species are common and widespread, making them just that much more challenging. The Ruddy-capped Nightingale Thrush is, in my experience, the hardest of the three species to see.

This week my birdy buddy, Martin, joined me for a trip to Argentina and one of our first birds from the Costanera Sur Reserve was a male Double-collared Seedeater. The Sporophila family contains exclusively Neotropic species (within the flexible Thraupidae ) and S. eBird claims 331 species for the site.

This gull inhabits the high Andean plateau of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina at elevations ranging from 3300 to 4400 m (10827 to 14436 feet). I guess, the black hood on the latter species, and the fact that both winter in Peru led me to associate them as relatives. It normally lives as far from the sea as can be.

I have seen two species of woodcreeper in Central America, the Ruddy Woodcreeper and Tawny-winged Woodcreeper. I have seen tens of thousands of birds in my life, and probably around two thousand species. I do remember seeing a woodcreeper, but it was one I saw in Argentina as a child. It is species A. You see a bird.

In fact, this is one species that seems to thrive in the face of rampant development. This phoebe is a fixture in the American Southwest and Central America and can be spotted all the way down to Argentina. This phoebe of phoebes is considered a loner as far as its own kind is concerned, but doesn’t appear to mind human presence.
