For the past few weeks I have been touting all the different reasons that Southeast Arizona is such an amazing area for birding. If you look draw line straight up a northern biased line thru the Sea of Cortez, the normal path of a hurricane in the Sea of Cortez, it would run very nearly right thru Southeast Arizona.

When we first landed here in Tucson, Arizona, fate worked her magic, and one of the first people I met was Luke Safford. Luke is a coordinator with the Tucson Audubon Society, and was incredibly helpful with getting my feet on the ground, as far as South East Arizona Birding. After removing the legs, swallowed the bug whole.

It’s a well-known fact that southeast Arizona in summer is awesome. My first birding trip ever was to Arizona. It was time to drive south and up, to the Sky Islands of southeast Arizona. There were a couple of birding festivals in progress in Arizona, and I arrived on the heels of several groups. At least for birders.

One of the small cities south of Tucson Arizona, Amado, has a very small pond, right along highway 19, also known as the Nogales Highway. Most birders that have spent any amount of time chasing down our fine feathered friends have learned that most cities waste treatment facilities are incredible magnets for many species of birds.

For most avian migrants heading south towards Mexico, Central and South America, crossing thru the Arizona desert areas can provide very few water, food and resting areas. This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies.

Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. The resident Wild Turkey population is always ready for an easy meal at the feeders. This is a great place to see a good number of Mexican Jays. I was quiet surprised to see this male Western Tanager show up right at dark for a quick drink of water.

Yes, it’s the same species that so many North American birders have looked for around the San Pedro River (myself included) and like those Arizona birds, our urban Gray Hawks likewise use riparian zones. In Costa Rica, the urban raptor can take more than one form but usually, the local avian top predator is a Gray Hawk.

One of the great things about living in southern Arizona is our proximity to Mexico. A common local resident when we were in Mexico, the Costa’s Hummingbird is a little bit more of a rarity here in Arizona. This picture shows the Canyon Wren, bringing food to their nest, located in a narrow crack in a cliff side.

I had the pleasure of paying this national park a visit on a trip to Arizona in late May, and I was immediately struck by how important this species of plant is to this ecosystem. Perhaps because of the heat and the lack of insulation which the cactus can provide, Purple Martins do not nest in man-made houses in Arizona.

Yes, this fancy bird is the same species that ABA birders hope to chance upon in Arizona. I don’t see this one too often, it seems to be much more common in other, more wooded areas. Plain-capped Starthroat. If you get a chance to bird dry forest between there and here, you may notice that this long beaked bird is fairly common.

All my sightings up until now have come from Arizona. Having spent all morning bashing the Sonoran Desert hoping to find my lifer roadrunner for example, I retired to a burger restaurant only to watch Mrs Geococcyx brazenly skip down the drive-through lane and c**k an eye up at the delivery window.

In other hummingbird migration news, the wildfires in southeast Arizona this summer did a number on hummingbird habitat and birds are swarming to feeders. Most of the nectar rich flowers western birds use as a fuel up spot on their way south aregone and birds are crowding at feeders.

The attraction of Southeastern Arizona in summer stems from the presence of certain highly range-restricted species. These beautiful sparrows with finely-streaked crowns and rufescent epulets only reside in a small swathe of Arizona and Mexico. Where else can you see something like that?!
