Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently proposed reintroducing California Condors in the Pacific Northwest. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. In 1806, Lewis and Clark saw condors near the Columbia River, which makes up much of the Washington-Oregon border.

The focus on Malheur is and was appropriate, but we should not lose sight of the significance of the entire National Wildlife Refuge System. The combination is potent.

Ferruginous Hawks were petitioned for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act in 1991 but rejected; currently they are listed as a Category 2 Species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as a Sensitive Species by the Bureau of Land Management 1. They are listed as vulnerable in Canada.
