I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

Read the complete article at pantagraph.com. Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S.

And it’s the subject of a new article in National Geographic by author and birder Jonathan Franzen. There aren’t many solutions proferred—the article is really about consciousness-raising—but it’s well worth a read.

This article reaffirms my belief that it's more humane to slaughter horses in the US than to ship them for slaughter to Canada or Mexico. I don't like it either way, but one is better than the other for sure.

These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat. According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets. A good story from China for once.

In the Palm Beach Post 's article, " Animal rights activists appalled by Ale House's lobster game ," the restaurant's owner says he has no plans to remove the game and says the patrons love the novelty. " The final sentence of the article is: " It's no different than a lobster tank in a restaurant," said Palm Beach Ale House owner Jay Starr.
