Other species probably breeding here – judging from their presence in pairs during the summer months – include Black-winged Cuckooshrike … … Black-naped Oriole … … Lesser Coucal … … And Pied Kingfisher. As a consequence, it was felt that the bird’s name needed to be changed.

We managed to get everybody out and onto the transportation only about 45 minutes behind schedule, and as the sun rose over the regions famed White Desert, we were on our way southward. It wasn’t that long ago that Sociable Lapwing was considered a critically endangered species with a population of only around 1500.

In these rural areas, public transportation is still mostly based on rather old-fashioned modes. This species seems to enjoy being in mixed flocks with the White-shouldered Starling. Mai Po Nature Reserve : world famous locale for shorebirds, waterfowl, waders, and wetland birds; wintering grounds for certain endangered species. Wood Storks are an exceptionally old species, and its existence predates the last Ice Age, around 15,000 years ago, by tens of thousands of years more. That’s only based on the physical evidence, taking into account more circumstantial stuff, the species is probably even older still. Here’s to the Wood Stork, then!
