Lakshmi’s Owl

Common throughout India with a range that covers much of South-east Asia, it can often be seen around habitation where it catches small rodents, insects and invertebrates.

Birding Fengxian, Shanghai in summer

Edward Brown (1810-1867) was a Victorian-age bird collector particularly active in East Asia, in whose honor this shrike species was named. A large nearby park, Shanghai Haiwan National Forest Park, seems mercifully deserted on weekdays, partly due to the stiff entrance fee, partly because it is not easily accessible by public transport.

An HBW entry on this bird – at least to me – rather highlights the absurdity of some religious activities: “In SE Asia, widely trapped in large numbers for Buddhist religious purposes, but most birds are later released.”

It wasn’t that long ago that Sociable Lapwing was considered a critically endangered species with a population of only around 1500.

The Vulturine Storks

It’s no looker, it may not nest on our roofs or transport our progeny, but its story is far more fascinating than any old wives’ tale.
