Windjana Gorge in 2020

Having observed the Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at the Derby Poo Ponds on June 19th we found ourselves at Windjana Gorge first thing the following morning. Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. We spent several hours at Windjana Gorge and there was a great variety in wildlife as always.

There is a lot of bird movement around Australia at the moment due to the weather, so time to go and investigate! It actually looked like the station owner was breeding birds rather than cattle! This will be a “Wet&# season that all of the wildlife will remember.

Borrow pit birding near Broome

This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. It takes roughly 50 minutes to get there and it is not signposted.

A day trip to Derby

Both native animals and cattle from the stations wander aimlessly onto the highway at any time of day, but it is worse between dusk and dawn. With current travel restrictions around Australia and internationally we are grateful we live in an area that is so rich with birds and other wildlife.

Birding beyond Brisbane

You soon adapt to the early mornings and early nights to coincide with the wildlife! As we travelled around the hinterland we discovered that the Cattle Egret in that area of Queensland were with the cattle! Cattle Egret and cattle. Australian Bustard and cattle. One lovely campsite!

Birding Broome to Derby

Now it is perfect weather for camping in the bush and enjoying the wildlife and for this reason we took two days to explore the bush between Broome and Derby. In fact the edges beside the highway are being burned to give vehicles more vision beyond the long dry grass as cattle wander freely across the northern parts of Western Australia.
