This is a remote part of Australia and distances can soon be covered, though on this journey north on 29th January we did encounter eleven sections of the main highway that had gone under water at creeks between Broome and Fitzroy Crossing. Over the two weeks since I first introduced you to this family of Pied Oystercatchers there has been a lot of walking. This family of Pied Oystercatchers have not only walked in and out with the tides, which are big in Broome, but also moved about two kilometres north. Pied Oystercatcher family.

Once the Pied Oystercatcher family had made the move to the north to be closer to the reef and the high quality food they were less disturbed by people and cars, though there are still risks of attack by Black Kites, Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea Eagles. It rained both nights at Saddle Creek, but we made use of the shelter and it did cool it down slightly! We could see there was more rain closer to the Western Australia border and we had to traverse a flooded creek along the highway on returning to Kununurra the next day.

Keep River National Park sits on the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory and it is entered from just over the border. There is an information shelter as you enter the park and then an information centre close to Cockatoo Lagoon a short distance in. per person per night and discounts for families.

One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. Tawny Frogmouths are actually more closely related to the Nightjar family. Tawny Frogmouth before it changes shape!
