Another development could be a compact edition, like that new guide for Australia?

In Australia where the endemic prey population has evolved without cats, the problem has reached the stage where drastic measures have been imposed. There is a cat curfew for domestic animals in some states and a cull has been instigated to try to reduce the number of feral felines, currently estimated at 2 million.

We have to understand, though, that this was a natural predator and not one of our introduced feral cats or foxes. Last year they were successful at raising one chick, so we just have to hope they are this year too. The moist Pied Oystercatcher nest site after the thieving.

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

We can only hope that by laying only one egg and having only one chick to raise that they may have more luck second time round. We do not add debris to protect the nests and the main threat to the nests still appears to be feral cats. Pied Oystercatcher nest site.

I say “luck” because there is a problem with predation by feral cats and it really is beyond their control as it were. Sadly we don’t expect them to successfully raise chicks this early in the season, but you never know! The first clutch of eggs were first observed on June 11th and were predated a few days later.

Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. She successfully raised a chick in 2007, which has been living in a large flock to the south of Broome. We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!
