We have had a pair move due to human traffic increasing through the dune system and others have had to adapt to the changing landscape. Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia and they do take a lot of the eggs. As we explored the reef over the following hours we found our Pied Oystercatchers enjoying and investigating food options.

We had both seen it go into the hollow and decided to go and investigate from a distance to see what it was. It had quite possibly not come across a human being in this remote part of Australia and these birds are generally only seen at night-if at all. I had my camera ready as we had no idea what was watching as we approached.

In fact, the Dodo belonged to a clade (sometimes called Raphini) of 15 remarkable, bizarre, intriguing island-adapted pigeons, some of which are still alive today, but eight of which have been hacked from the tree of life, driven to extinction by humans. It is about an hour’s drive to Lake Argyle, which is Australia’s largest artificial lake by volume. Crocodiles below the dam wall As we entered the park we noticed the tap was dripping and although it was not potable for humans it was much appreciated by the Silver-crowned Friarbirds. An inquisitive Great Bowerbird!

This may seem like an incredible distance to some of you, but in Australia that is a 12 hour drive with only two small towns and a small community to pass through. Crocodile warning As you walk out towards the hide the birdlife is not the least bit bothered about any human activity and remains along the water’s edge.
