The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. They will be seeking protection where they can and they will return as soon as the rain eases. Gantheaume Point offers both food and protection for a young Pied Oystercatcher chick, which is very important when they are unable to fly. Pied Oystercatchers are not a species that we observe flying very often at all. The family of Pied Oystercatchers soon made their move to Gantheaume Point.

Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers. Two of the most popular beaches for shorebirds roosting have also been the nest sites for two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers this breeding season.

Our next stop, Havelock was one I had been looking forward to, as it has a huge estuary, with a large number of species that could be found here. I added the Australasian Shoveler finally, along with 22 other species that have already made the list. Despite that, things did pan out pretty well on the tidal flats formed by the estuary.

This park protects the primary rainforest of the Tarcoles River basin, together with the one of the three remaining populations of Scarlet Macaws in the country. Cats, along with other introduced mammals, are genuinely a problem in New Zealand in a way they aren’t in most of the rest of the world (Australia has similar problems mostly with foxes and cats). Even wiping out one species, like possums, or stoats, or hedgehogs is probably beyond current methods.

I saw Painted Wolves again, my favourite species ever. The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. This species are long living and so the population appears to be sustainable at this stage despite the predation. The Pied Oystercatchers are actually incredibly predictable when it comes to the dates that they lay eggs, the locations that they choose and the various strategies that each pair use in order to protect their young.

Thankfully with the longevity of this species it appears the population is fairly stable, but this may not always be the case if predation continues at the rate that it is. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young.
