Magpie Geese breed near Broome once again

We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia. The highway divides a huge expanse of flooded land and numerous bird species have bred in the area over recent weeks. We know there will be a dramatic reduction in the population of our native wildlife when that happens.

Black-tailed Godwits around Broome

In Australia we encounter the subspecies Limosa limosa melanuroides. The Black-tailed Godwits that we observe here in Australia breed in east Siberia and Mongolia. Both the female Black-tailed Godwit and Bar-tailed Godwit are larger than the male of the species. There are three subspecies of Black-tailed Godwit in the world.

Whistling Kites breeding

It is always rewarding to observe successful breeding in wildlife and we are fortunate here in Broome that so many bird species breed around the area. Whistling Kites are widespread across Australia and around Broome they help clean up the carrion along with the Black Kites. Choosing a wide branch to land on was a good choice!

According to Wikipedia, the national bird of Australia is the Emu – which I have not seen yet. On the other hand, some websites state that the Laughing Kookaburra is Australia’s national symbol. I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter.

Birds aren’t real – The Black-tailed Trogon

Those are most likely the same individuals who believe that Australia doesn’t exist. Sani lodge canopy tower, Ecuador On the way to to the top I got fantastic views of birds and other wildlife because they were at eye level. In that case, I think I can guess the perfect candidate that gave birth to such a ludicrous idea: the Trogons.

Sea Snakes of Northern Australia

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. Carpet Shark washed up Carpet shark being returned to the sea I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into our varied wildlife here in the north of Australia.

Western Australia remains closed to everybody from everywhere. It is only recently that we could move out of the Shire of Broome into the rest of the Kimberley and allowing the rest of Western Australia into the Kimberley has only happened recently too. It does not matter if you are from interstate, because our borders remain closed.
