A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. So if you want to see a Kirtland’s Warbler, you go to Michigan in May or June.

Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. According to a December 1970 article in the New York Times , there was a flock of 9 to 12 birds in Fort Tilden.

Snowy Owl irruptions are relatively predictable and often huge, with birds arriving as far south of their normal breeding range as Florida and the Bahamas. The white feathers of Snowy Owls allow you to see the blood from their most recent kills still staining their plumage, which is about as metal as any wild animal is likely to get.
