They are found in the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Barbuda and Jamaica. But one man was listening to the calls of the whistle blowers -- calls of widespread wetland destruction, poaching, pesticides and destructive feral wildlife. They are also the rarest.

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list. Forest Service.

Kirtland’s Warblers are rare, apparently fewer than 2,000 in the world, they winter in the Bahamas and summer in Michigan. On a totally ordinary Toledo afternoon when I was visiting my favorite Metropark, there he was: a spectacular indigo minding his own business at one of the wildlife center’s birdfeeders.
