But one man was listening to the calls of the whistle blowers -- calls of widespread wetland destruction, poaching, pesticides and destructive feral wildlife. They are also the rarest.

And, while friends have told that me that I can go to the Bahamas and easily see the warbler in January, it turns out that is not true, the bird is elusive in its winter habitat as well (which is not Jack Pine, by the way). Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list. Forest Service.

When we returned to Tucson, from the Bahamas, I was approaching a milestone number, 1300 bird species, and drove myself hard, climbing, hiking, searching, and driving all over the state of Arizona looking for those last eight birds. Bahamas Totals: 58. John O’Groats Ferry Boat Wildlife Tours – Scotland. Qatar Totals: 9.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

We soon were close to the Mokohinau Islands , one of the many islands in the area that serve as wildlife refuges. Hes previously poked albatrosses with sticks in Hawaii, provided target practice for gulls in California, chased monkeys up and down hills Uganda, wrestled sharks in the Bahamas and played God with grasshopper genetics in Namibia.
