Twenty-five-year-old Luna Burke is risking everything to smuggle a homicidal BaldEagle out of her husband’s private zoo in Florida, reunite the bird with its mate, and get them both to an eagle sanctuary in Canada. But I only rehabbed birds, so I had to do research and call my mammal rehabber friends. photo by John Huba.
Frankly, if the name of the BaldEagle was North Korean Eagle ( Haliaeetus coreaseptentrionalis ?), While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus.
We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. We also spotted Raven , BaldEagle , Black-billed Magpie , and the inevitable Canada Goose.
After driving along Research Road before dawn to pick up nocturnal species such as Eastern Screech-Owl , I began to bird Lucky Hammock at about 6:45AM. On January 1st, 2013 at 4:30AM, I woke up to my alarm, and the race was on. The male Vermilion Flycatcher outside of Everglades National Park, by Carlos Sanchez. It was over.
Development, conservation, and climate change have affected bird distribution in good ways (a record 282 BaldEagles found on the January 2009 official count!) Of course, these are stories of over 460 species, condensed and informed by research gleaned from ornithological literature dating back to 1869. Should you buy this book?
There is a major difference: the Raptors guides are photographic and the Birds of Prey guides are illustrated with Wheeler’s paintings, over 1,000 images in each guide, organized with logical precision for reference, research, and comparison, with a self-evident side benefit–the portrayal of the beauty of raptors.
This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. Northern Fulmar, image courtesy of Peter Hodum.
I mention these trips because, along with other trips and experiences closer to home, they inform my research into my future birding travel. For example, not much can beat the experience of seeing a BaldEagle scare up thousands of Snow Geese at Sacramento NWR. Your prior trips will inform your birding travel planning too.
Data from the wind-power companies notes the deaths at least 85 Golden Eagles and BaldEagles since 1997, with at least 67 of those deaths occurring with in the past five years. It’s worth noting that these numbers are self-reported, so researchers assume that actual death totals are higher.
“Tomcat” uses diphacinone, a first generation anticoagulant known to have caused the deaths of bobcats, mountain lions, domestic housecats, songbirds, and birds of prey including Kestrels and BaldEagles.
Every bird that uses marine ecosystems, from storm-petrels to BaldEagles , already feels the effects of ocean acidification on some level; it is estimated that within the past 200 years, our oceans have become 30% more acidic, which is shocking.
I did a little research, and came across good birding reports on Gulf Park, so to Gulf Park I went. We were only a few miles from shore, so watching Ospreys and BaldEagles return with fish from the Gulf was fascinating, as were the Double-crested Cormorants and Brown Pelicans that periodically flew overhead.
For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. A Great Backyard Bird Count Miracle Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of January 2011) What is the International Bird Rescue Research Center Anyway? Or These Blasts From The Past What’s In A Name? It’s free!
A recent study of a multiyear, peer-reviewed research project, conducted in Texas, indicate dove hunters using shotshells loaded with lead pellets enjoy no advantage in effectiveness over those using shotshells firing non-toxic steel pellets of similar or slightly larger size.
I am particularly happy to see that the bird communication section includes recent research on singing female birds. BaldEagle, for example, is still said to be “formerly more widespread” though the range map shows expansion. These are all informative and current.

I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a BaldEagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. Most scientific research really just proves the obvious. As Cincinnati is sort of the place where one of my favorite bands, The National, comes from, I am not going to grumble too much about it.
