This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Unfortunately, while I was still living in the Seattle area, I had discovered the Nisqually Refuge to late, just weeks prior to setting sail south.

I did manage to get a few Surf Scoters, my first BaldEagle of the year, Pelagic Cormorants , and an unlikely pair of Western Grebes out in the middle of that rough water. Such is the case when we got a call from our good friends Scott and Monica, inviting us to travel with them by sailboat up to the San Juan Islands, north of Seattle. A pair BaldEagles were doing fly-bys over our heads , and there were Belted Kingfishers, Canada Geese , A pair of Mallards, and three Great Blue Herons.
As someone who has a spent a week this August on a family vacation in Seattle I think that I am eminently qualified to write a full blog post on how to bird Seattle. If you are from Seattle please feel free to skip this or, at the very least, read it charitably and then don’t be mean in the comments.
The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, American Kestrels, and a fair number of BaldEagles all can be found on the refuge year round. I got to see several Brown Creepers in the area.
