There was no pretending this was a whale-watching trip, a ruse that is growing stale anyway. BaldEagles competed with hauled out Harbor Seals for our attention and we were told that the concentration of eagles was due to the salmon not yet running in the rivers. And quite a view it was!
And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and BaldEagle. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it! Then the 80s happened.
We later signed up for a whale and birdwatching tour with Captain Wayne , who had a smallish 12-person boat. An auspicious BaldEagle sighting – positioned high in a pine tree – heralded the beginning of a magical afternoon, where we sailed amidst over a million breeding seabirds. Happy puffins. Murres and Kittiwakes.

Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to BaldEagles in Whale Cove. White-rumped Sandpiper And this year has been notable for several birds that wouldn’t normally be found here.
I watched this BaldEagle catch and eat a Blue-winged Teal at Viera a couple of years ago. Past trips have had jaegers, Humpback Whales , and a variety of other sea life. Viera is great, full of good birds, and well worth visiting. The regular birds are pretty special and you never know when a major rarity might show up.
