Jochen knows why I thought it was important to share this Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at Big Egg Marsh. I wish this Baltimore Oriole had stuck around a bit longer. With a reflection in this image too! This Song Sparrow really liked the mulberries. (It’s It’s the same bird as at the top of the post.). Expect more soon!

And the Baltimore Oriole is an iconic eastern bird, which winters along Mexico’s east coast, but never in the west. And then there was a Green Heron , not only showing us its nest, but also an egg. But it is a private property, to which I don’t have access. But obviously, I haven’t seen one since then.

The Oriolest Oriole

In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year. Baltimore Orioles are surprisingly slight when you get a look at them, but troupials are about the size of a jay, and with the bearing to go with it. I will broker no argument to the contrary.

Another (Almost) Big Day in Queens

The beach in the Rockaways was next where I saw expected beach birds and then I was on to Big Egg Marsh where I cleaned up pretty well on shorebirds, including my first Bad-ass Sandpipers of the year. I was sad to see that this Killdeer at Big Egg Marsh had an injured leg though it wasn’t injured enough that it would let me catch it.
