With almost 1200 species of birds in the Capital Region, the house and roof steadily filled with Egyptian Vultures, BarnOwls, Hornbills, Black Ibis, Cattle Egrets, Steppe Eagles , a multitude of songbirds and pigeons , as well as the occasional cobra or palm squirrel.
It was our second trip out on this piece of highway this year and sadly the second deceased BarnOwl. Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead BarnOwls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. Grass Owls are also present in the area, but remain off our bird list.
The BarnOwl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern). Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split. The Blue Tit, the common garden staple of Europe, was now the Eurasian Blue Tit.

Even the names we give to some birds reflect their dependence on the cultivated landscape – we have BarnOwls ( Tyto alba ) and Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica ) over much of the world, and Orchard Orioles ( Icterus spurius ) in the Americas really do have a fondness for fruit groves.
Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased BarnOwl. They were busy feeding around the cattle water trough that the cattle can’t get to unless they want wet hooves! This is the only highway around Australia in this part of the country and we don’t need it falling to bits!
The year list remains sluggish at 1489 , but the life list received a boost from the eBird taxonomy reshuffle and now includes 4076 species. The year list remains sluggish at 1489 , but the life list received a boost from the eBird taxonomy reshuffle and now includes 4076 species.

On the way back to the headquarters we passed a barn that was the roost of an Eastern BarnOwl. On the far shore there were White-faced Heron and Cattle Egret, and closer around there were more Purple Swamphens and even some Littel Grassbirds, although for the life of me I could not get those last ones. Another time.
