“I’d check my bank statements anyway,” cracked Michele Wellard, of Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill Center Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic , during one of our frequent Rehabber FaceBook Free-For-Alls. The Common Grackle pictured at left was a patient at Wildlife Care Alliance in Virginia. “I BTW, I’m still missing F4.”.
Wander through my front door and glance upwards and you’ll find at least two watching you, a Tawny Owl and a BarnOwl , both sadly gathered as roadkills. Above our fireplace is a large painting of a BarnOwl. Some larger areas of suitable habitat are holding numbers in double figures.
The rodents eat the bait, stagger out of the building looking for water, and are easy prey for whatever carnivore happens to be passing by, be it wildlife or someone’s pet. This means not only can they continue poisoning kids, pets, and wildlife for years while the case drags through court, but now they have a monopoly on the market.
Wildlife lovers and rehabilitators, as always, tried to intervene. “I If you see a flyer such as this and you’re unfamiliar with wildlife, you can 1) believe the hundreds of people who write things like “I know for a fact a BarnOwl can carry off a 3-pound Chihuahua!” “I had no idea!” “How
“It is next to impossible to persuade people in India to donate money for injured raptors,” says Nadeem Shehzad, co-founder of Wildlife Rescue , a registered non-profit in the Chawri Bazar area of Old Delhi. Watch this remarkable video about Wildlife Rescue, and read their blog. It is our duty to save them.”.
But “Hawk”’s active ingredient, a deadly second-generation anticoagulant, bromadialone, has been implicated in the deaths of Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, and other raptors : American Kestrels, BarnOwls, Golden Eagles, Great Horned Owls, and Turkey Vultures.
This week’s guest blog was written by Linda Hufford, who has been a wildlife rehabilitator specializing in raptors for over twenty years. As a wildlife rehabilitator, I’ve used many of their gathered facts to improve my bird care. She runs Birds of Texas Rehabilitation Center in Austin County, Texas. His answer surprised me.
With casual bird watchers out numbering hardcore bird watchers, people with a camera and an interest in wildlife are not going to have all the facts about wildlife before they go out. And quite frankly, I’ve seen some of the most dedicated of ethical birders get excited at finding an owl and get closer than they should.
This rookery also housed nesting BarnOwls (not the bird box on the lower half of the pole on the far right). It’s called Woodworking for Wildlife and even though it’s put out by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, it can apply in other areas as well. This is perfect for a small urban backyard.
The ORI maintains a research station in the Mission Valley of Western Montana, neighboring the Ninepipes National Wildlife Refuge. Turns out, there’s hardly a better place in America to have as your home base, if you’re doing owl research. Why Ninepipes?
One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. I’ve never been on an “owl prowl” before, and was thrilled that the one we joined turned up the promised quarry, and then some.
Soccer Player Kicks Owl on Field? By Mike • March 2, 2011 • 3 comments Tweet Share During a soccer game in Colombia, a player kicked an owl that was on the field. The bird, which looked like a BarnOwl , was the mascot for the opposing team and died from its injuries. Video and desultory apology here.
Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barnowl because it was almost white.
I always undertake a number of short timed surveys for the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count in February, and though the counts didn’t add anything to the year list, they were memorable for finding big flocks of finches and buntings, while a daylight-hunting BarnOwl was a pleasing sight.
Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The bunny got away.
In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused. Link: [link].
Clearly, author Phyllis Limbacher Tildes, the author of 24, soon to be 25, children’s books, is also a birder (and a little research brings up a presentation she gave at Ogeechee Audubon, Georgia with the biographical information and she and her family “love watching birds and wildlife seen near their lagoon on Skidaway Island.”
You may have birding from the window of your home, you may have been counting birds at a local wildlife refuge, you may have been counting birds on a feverish run from one end of a state to the next. No luck there but at least the rain had stopped and the Striped Owl near my house called as soon as we stopped the car.
I had been hoping that the BarnOwl I’d seen here a couple of days before would appear, but it was clearly back at its roost. A Grey Wagtail on the river Black Bourn Micklemere is a wetland reserve belonging to the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, and was my next location.

I spooked three BarnOwls out of a dense scrub row, just as the sun was setting. Jeanne has long desired top photograph the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiestas ( You can see her photos here )and I wanted to visit the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. This one flew right over my head. The first one nearly took my hat off.
I decided to go to KPBL after my first day in Cairns and use the place as my base with which to explore the Atherton Tableland, a high area to the west of Cairns famous for its wildlife. We soon located two nests of Eastern BarnOwls , but were unable to find the Sooty Owls that make the site a drawn for many birders.
.” Writing about owls means writing about roughly 250 species (I counted 245 on the 2022 Clements spreadsheet, but I might have missed a few, and we all know that each classification system is different). I’m wondering if the subject of this book itself presented a challenge. This is a great summer read.
