Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it sometimes takes a “village” of rehabbers to save threatened wildlife. For the next two and a half weeks Sue continued to raise them, along with four other swifts she had in care. Timing is everything when it comes to releasing Chimney Swifts.
The lodge is unusual in having a raised walkway behind the lodge, allowing those of us keen to bird or watch wildlife when most normal people are resting in the middle of the day. At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher.
However, if we accept that some old reports were this species and not the very similar and easily confused Bat Falcon , it’s pretty likely that a few Orange-breasteds did hunt for Band-tailed Pigeons , parakeets, parrots, and other birds over the canopy of rainforests at the base of the Costa Rican mountains.
Of course, various species of bats as well. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Over fifteen different butterflies frequent our yard now, but I’m certain there are more as I’m not that good with insects in general.
So, potentially plenty of cuckoo chicks would have been raised by the bulbuls. For example, a hypothetical National Bulbul would have no chance to get any coverage here. And the result: all peanut shells were expelled, but the ejection rate of the fake eggs was the same in both groups and (I think) quite low at about 53%.
Birds and Booze News: Blue Owl Brewery of Austin, Texas has teamed up with the Travis Audubon Society to create a beer to raise awareness for the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler. Titletown Brewing Company of Green Bay, Wisconsin has brewed Swifts’ Night Ale to help raise awareness of recent declines in Chimney Swift populations.
Presumably, the species also not only eats fruit but also mammals and possibly birds –the HBW specifically mentions the species catching bats emerging from caves at dusk, and feeding them to juveniles. The Black Hornbill is listed as Vulnerable, a change for the worse from the previous listing as Near Threatened.
Elephants, whales, hippopotamuses, giraffes, and alligators use low-frequency sounds to communicate over long distances, often miles; and bats, dolphins, whales, frogs, and various rodents use high-frequency sounds to find food, communicate with others, and navigate. As we all know, dogs are “man’s best friend.”
Nor is the sight of the Greater Short-tailed Bat , which can still fly but instead chooses to scurry across the forest floor in the manner of a shrew. In order to raise our awareness, to remind us of what we have lost, and to inspire us to fight for Every. We must fight to save every species we can, every ecosystem, every niche.
He raised his binoculars above his head and cried out with courage and clarity, “I am Sparticus!” Bat Hawk – Macheiramphus alcinus. Bat Falcon – Falco rufigularis. Something needed to be done. Somebody had to take one for the team. Mike fixed me with his cold, steely, gray-eyed stare. 26 Nov 2019.
