A long time ago, before many of you may have been birding, I got my very first camera. Despite the disadvantage of not being able to take many photos or having to wait for the photos to be developed you did not need to worry about batteries, because they were all manually operated. My current AA battery camera.
1, 2012, egg-laying hens across many European countries will live with fewer discomforts: The European Commission has officially implemented its ban on battery cages, the notoriously cramped cages used by many egg farmers and criticized by animal rights proponents and veterinarians who call them cruel and harmful to the birds' welfare.
When was the last time you travelled for birding? It offers the richest pickings in Belgrade, especially with the incoming spring, but I must admit, the thing I miss the most is travelling and birding overseas. Back to the phone, it is important for navigation, too, as well as for a bird ID app, especially calls and songs.
But every Monday, when my weekend work peak has passed, I literally head for the hills, and recharge my batteries with a healthy dose of total solitude. And lots of birds, of course. This may be one reason why it is so hard to explain to non-birders the solitary passion that is birding. But for introverts and birders?
I also watched, but failed to get pictures of, the same young bird being fed by two different male House Sparrows. These particular birds were in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, but the same story is taking place all over the world right now, as few species have successfully adapted to as many locations as the House Sparrow.
Going birding is even more of a no-brainer now than before. Many moons ago, when I used to work in the (supposedly) booming petrochemical industry in Trinidad, most of my time was actually spent birding. I racked up a staggering number of life birds in the surprisingly rich surroundings during my four-odd years slaving for The Man.
It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.
I travel for birding. I’m about to head out to the Hula Valley Bird Festival and as I’m packing, I thought I would share with you some essentials I think any birder should plan to have in their suitcase–no matter where they are visiting. I’ve never regretted any of these items being in my suitcase.
Okay, this was a shorter distance observation, but even in such situations I love to see birds through the scope. I have an excellent scope – the very best piece of my birding equipment (oh, this year I should finally get a mobile phone adapter for it), and a rather inferior camera. Why should I sketch it, I am lousy at that.
Indeed, you only live twice: your second life starts when you bird Costa Rica for the first time. And, yee-haw, this would be my second attempt at a second life: three weeks ago I was invited to bird Costa Rica! Do you ever manage to get ready for a birding trip in a calm and orderly fashion?
No wonder folks are hoarding water and batteries! Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was actually a whole flock of birds. What was your best bird of the weekend? Tell us in the comments section about the rarest, loveliest, or most fascinating bird you observed. How about you?

No batteries required.
Over-all there were almost 80,000 photos taken, nearly 50 story’s posted on this website, and 10 countries, all with some amazing birds. In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. So, there are 21 birds that make my top 10 for the year.
The bird life of Kruger National Park appears to be distilled into a small area surrounding the hide and they seem oblivious to the observers with their battery of lenses poking out from the wooden building. Today an adult bird was hunting while two juvenile birds waited, knee-deep in water, apparently unclear what to do next.
Fort Tilden was totally closed and the cop standing guard at the road to Breezy Point looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if there was any chance someone who wanted to watch birds could get to the barrier beaches anywhere west of Fort Tilden. Birds are great but you know what? Yeah, I’m a bit slow sometimes.
As I’ve switched over to paid corporate birding (doing bird surveys for companies that want to put up wind farms or transmission lines), I’ve been fascinated by the world that has been opened to me and differences from the bird feeding world. Clearly the money is in dissuading birds. But back to the ads.
These birds are normally a constant presence on the lake, but because of the drought, it had been a year since I had seen the Grebes there, and a 18 months for the Ruddy Ducks. (I I took so many photos on this outing that my battery ran out of charge before I finally saw the Grebes , so no photos of those.). (In Semipalmated Plover.
Zelda, the Wild Turkey who makes Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan, her home, managed to survive the flooding and devastation that Manhattan suffered due to Hurricane Sandy.
Birding by kayak can now come off my bucket list. … My camera battery is probably pretty tired, too, from taking shot after shot of natural beauty and avian charmers. I’ll be reporting more in the next few days about the coolness that is the Spring Wings Bird Festival , held every year in Fallon, Nevada.
Anytime I travel, I do what it takes to get in some birding. After all, the best way to find new birds is to look in new places. Birding being best in the early morning, I get up before they do, and try to be back by breakfast — their breakfast. Morelia time), and still start birding at 6 a.m. San Mateo time).
But necessity is the mother of invention and some camera battery covers doubled up as spoons to ensure that our stomachs could stop their grumbling! Yes, meals are a high priority for us when we’re going birding! Just about then I realized that I had forgotten to pack spoons when packing breakfast.
In my younger days I was very keen on what is generally known as Big Day Birding, or trying to see as many species of birds as possible in one day. Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).
In fact, the guide represents such a bold leap forward that reading it makes one wonder what the future of bird guides holds. This is why we asked readers to share their views on the NEXT big step in bird guide design, philosophy, or technology as part of our Fun, Fun, Fun Crossley ID Guide Giveaway. Digital guides (for ipod, etc.)
Two more sparrows on the macadam ahead of me… In my early birding days, I would simply assume that they are sparrows, possibly not even taking another look at them, but now I am too old to be so naive. That is what I thought of it, but this spring I do feel the crisis more intensively, and my response is not to bird less, but more!
This is a chance to recharge out batteries, spend a little quite time together and try to get in a whole bunch of birding done. Don’t get me wrong, this was still a great place to relax, and there were plenty of birds to photograph, but I would be lying if I were to tell you I was not disappointed.
“The estuary and the delta of the River Kalamas form the most important wetland of northwest Greece”, so the “ Birding in Greece ” guidebook claims for the area where I am heading, a bit late since I overslept this morning. Yet, beside a few Little and one Great Egret , a raft of Eurasian Coots , no birds. It is getting a bit hot.
A non-countable exotic he may be, but the fan display of a peacock is one of the birding world’s most splendid sights. In the moderate warmth of a Miami morning, he was able to sustain his fan under light cloud for longer than my camera battery could last.

Bird vocalizations. If I was going out looking for a rarity or even just for a bird that I hadn’t seen (or heard) in awhile I would play the songs and, especially, the chip notes prior to getting into the field to ensure that if the bird called I would recognize it. Some of the more rare birds are overly mapped.
Have you read my blogs on birding Greece ? But, however successful it proved to be at the moment, waiting for accidental appearance is not the best birding tactic. On both routes, some 50-60 km / 30-40 mi from the border lies one magical lake where you should spend at least two nights and devote one full day to birding.
If you have a Canon DSLR camera, select the “Sensor Cleaning/ Clean Manually” facility from the menu (first ensure that you have a full battery). I had set aside the morning of Sunday, June 10th to cross the San Francisco Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean town of Half Moon Bay, a mere 25 minute drive away, for a few hours of birding. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. I was wrong.

My best bird of the weekend was a Great Black-backed Gull , a rarity in a land-locked Serbia, with less than 10 observations so far. At first, I made a few record shots, digiscoping through the Swarovski 25-60×65 STX with a hand-held mobile phone, until the battery went flat. The choice of a scope reflects one’s approach to birding.
Both the online world and the birding world are full of disputes, arguments, disagreements, squabbles, and quarrels. No matter what, spotting two owls in the same day is awesome!

The animal advocacy group Compassion Over Killing has created a new website to bring attention to the fact that Morningstar Farms continues to use "battery eggs" from caged birds in their products. To the Editor: Re “They’re Going to Wish They All Could Be California Hens” (front page, March 4): While the conditions in California’s colony cages are certainly better than those of the barren battery cages used for 90 percent of egg-laying hens in this country, they still involve cramming 60 animals into a wire cage, each bird with just 116 square (..)
The words “early bird” do not activate the threat region of our brain. Your brain can’t run at 100 percent on a 10 percent battery. We will not put ourselves in a position that feels threatening. As event professionals, that fear could also be a very low level of a sense of loss, like how we encourage people to register.
