The Red-winged Blackbirds were wet. So I had to settle for seeing a Black Phoebe , some Killdeers , and Caspian Terns standing by the Creek Mouth — all species I can see near home — and lots of Mallards , which do not occur in central Mexico, but are common in much of the rest of the world. The Spotted Towhees were wet.

In my younger days I was very keen on what is generally known as Big Day Birding, or trying to see as many species of birds as possible in one day. Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).

As I drove east through scenes of destruction that I can’t even come up with the words to describe, I was frustrated by the continuous flocks of birds going overhead – most were blackbirds but some, at least, were finches. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets.

One such controversial bird is the Veraguan Mango , a small hummingbird species that was, until very recently, believed to be a Panamanian endemic. We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. At 8:30AM we were already at 53 species and we knew we still had many more easy birds to find.
