It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.

Although relatively common here they’re notoriously difficult to see well – a phenomenon clearly not unique to this species ! Golden-crowned Warbler is one of the three resident warbler species on Trinidad. We counted seven of these alluring birds while I killed my camera battery. ” – I beg to differ.

Ascending further requires a hike – required to see some high-elevation species absent from elsewhere on the island. Laziness definitely played a part in the decision but truth be told we were happy to simply be in the presence of the forest as it has been many moons since that happened.

This species is still uncommon in the Balkans and despite the recent spread, Kalamas is the most reliable site for it in Greece (and this made my only second ever observation of them in Europe). I reach for my camera, only to realise that the batteries were flat. Could they possibly be…? And I know I am in Heaven.

I dropped my meager box of baby supplies off and stopped to chat to the two volunteers who were already helping people who had stopped in looking for warm clothing, batteries, and a sympathetic ear. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets. I have never seen Evening Grosbeaks in Queens.

The future definitely will be electronic. No need to page through dozens of plates of similar looking species anymore. Where do you charge your batteries in Namibia’s Kaokoveld during a longer trip away from lodges and hotels? I can’t get a good feel for them (I still prefer my book version). Off to the Amazon?

As always, we held our sit high atop Battery Harris at Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. A pair of flyover American Black Ducks , a flock of Green-winged Teal winging west way out over the ocean, and surprisingly, all three of our expected falcon species were all seen relatively early in the morning.
