“The estuary and the delta of the River Kalamas form the most important wetland of northwest Greece”, so the “ Birding in Greece ” guidebook claims for the area where I am heading, a bit late since I overslept this morning. I reach for my camera, only to realise that the batteries were flat.
Have you read my blogs on birding Greece ? Presuming that you live somewhere in Europe and plan a car trip to Greece, let me suggest a couple of routes that will increase your tour list. For the Ionian Sea, take the motorway exit for the town of Prilep, continue through Bitola and head for the Medzitlija – Niki crossing to Greece.
Don’t forget all the cables, chargers, backup batteries and international electrical adapters! Back to the phone, it is important for navigation, too, as well as for a bird ID app, especially calls and songs. Some birders might consider a voice recorder and a speaker (but I prefer not to use playback). Also a field notebook and pens.
At first, I made a few record shots, digiscoping through the Swarovski 25-60×65 STX with a hand-held mobile phone, until the battery went flat. I bought my first 20 years ago from some Russian on the seashore in Greece, but have not used it much because of rather dark images (I even took it to India with me – and didn’t use it even once).
Ben Lizdas commented somewhere how fascinated he is with optics: in this electronic era, the top-notch binoculars are true high-tech, yet they work without batteries. Cover photo: birding Greece. Personally, I prefer scopes over cameras, and paper over apps, but am open to and use the products of both worlds. Inset: birding Costa Rica.
