This is a chance to recharge out batteries, spend a little quite time together and try to get in a whole bunch of birding done. This allows me to see frigates, boobies, terns and pelicans on the saltwater side. Then, I try to you avoid the bad parts. This was a real bonus spot last year, especially with migratory sparrows.

The next one, the lagoon of Vatatsa (at the eastern side of the Valtos Bay), offered a lot more egrets, one Squacco Heron , two distant Dalmatian Pelicans and quite a few little things chirping from their hiding places in the tamarisk bushes by the road. I reach for my camera, only to realise that the batteries were flat.

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. In the case of Ionian Sea and the Prespa Lakes National Park, I would recommend two full days / three nights, and in the case of Aegean and the Kerkini Lake National Park, my recommendation goes towards three days / four nights.

And seeing as there were good northwest winds overnight, weather radar had shown lots of birds taking off, and the winds were expected to continue from the north through the morning, I decided that I would make my way to Fort Tilden at first light and install myself on the Battery Harris Platform.

At five-forty-five Sunday morning I started the eBird checklist while perched atop the Battery Harris Platform at Fort Tilden. Then Matthieu pointed out the Brown Pelican flying by over the ocean and all hell broke loose! Everyone managed to see the pelican except for one person (sorry, Donna ).

The storm surge at The Battery on the southern shore of Manhattan reached 4.0 There were also only three Brown Pelicans that showed up, all in Suffolk County. The Brown Pelicans lingered on for several days. feet, overtopping the sea wall in several locations.
