As I am already familiar with CL Companion, ELs and NLs, as well as the ATS/STX scopes, now I had a chance to try those toys I am not familiar with, such as hunting EL Range binoculars with built-in electronics telling the user the distance and an azimuth angle (interesting, but I still prefer my binoculars without batteries).

A Quick Drive

The machine-gun drumming of a Chestnut Woodpecker greeted us once we alighted from the vehicle. No visual on the woodpecker, sadly – several Scaled Pigeons bolted from the treetops as we searched, though. The eerie entrance to Asa Wright, a feeble whimper of what once was.

Isolation, a.k.a. Business as Usual

A Lineated Woodpecker banged its head against a dry branch. We counted seven of these alluring birds while I killed my camera battery. Before I had even cut the engine I caught a White-bearded Manakin staring. Violaceous Euphonias , Bay-headed Tanagers and Bananaquits fed on berries overhead. Bay-headed Tanagers. Turquoise Tanager.

The Greek Strategy

Head for the sea only when you fully recharge your batteries. In the case of Ionian Sea and the Prespa Lakes National Park, I would recommend two full days / three nights, and in the case of Aegean and the Kerkini Lake National Park, my recommendation goes towards three days / four nights.

The resident fashion critic of eBird is not very impressed with the Orange-backed Woodpecker , stating that it is “dressed all in patchwork” It has one of the more stupid-sounding genus names – Reinwardtipicus, which is made up of the name of Dutch naturalist Prof.
