Though I grew up where the Hudson Valley meets the Catskill Mountains, in the heart of Black Bear country, I can count my encounters with said bears on the fingers of one hand. In my later teenage years I saw a bear or a mother-and-cub pair three times when I was behind the wheel of my car. That’s a big bear!

A federal appeals court made a final decision Wednesday on whether Fish and Wildlife could allow oil companies to interfere with polar bears. The second bear to meet its end this year on the Trans-Canada Highway has prompted an animal rights group to call for immediate repairs to a fence line intended to protect wildlife in Banff National Park. Park staff had been monitoring the bear in the hopes the adult female would avoid the busy roadway. From the Calgary Herald.

A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. For the second time in recent history, brown bears have been declared extinct in Austria. Unfortunately there are no bears left in Austria, in the Northern Limestone Alps. The last bear, known as ‘Moritz', an Austrian born bear, has not been seen since 2010. Why is so much wildlife news so frigging sad?!

Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks.

They bear wonderful-sounding names like “ Can-can-da-campina. The new birds inhabit the southern portion of the Amazon, some only in Brazil but others in Bolivia and Peru as well. Of the bunch, 14 are passerines. The 15th is grouped in the Bucconidae family and appears similar to a Striolated Puffbird. Both images by Vitor de Q.
