Flashy of look, brash of attitude, and strident of voice, they bomb around announcing every discovery – ripe acorns, sleeping owls, snakes in need of scolding – to the world. 1978, for reference, was the year of my birth. But shifting baseline syndrome doesn’t just apply to things that have become diminished.

Breeding bird surveys appears to show the resplendent Allen’s Hummingbird (like Corey’s capture, above) in decline—but not in Southern California, where examination of eBird data reveals that members of a residential population appear to be faring much better than their migrating brethren. I’ve tackled Texas, collected in California, fooled around in Florida. I’ve even paid a few calls to Massachusetts in the dead of winter for finches and owls. This Loggerhead Shrike ( Lanius ludovicianus ) was a life bird for me at the Salton Sea in California in 2018. But history doesn’t seem to have recorded which species of bird first dared to land on an electrical wire. And we move on to the next speck looming ahead and the game repeats itself, over and over.

Many gringos make their way to Baja California Sur every year, although the majority are probably heading to Cabo San Lucas to party and test the human limit of tequila endurance. They do bear some resemblance to Sage Thrashers , but have a much heavier, more sickle-shaped bill. A male Belding’s Yellowthroat. Hecho en Mexico.

172 lists were shared and 1004 species were seen, both records for October, so well done beats! Barn Owl – Tyto alba. Japanese Scops-Owl – Otus semitorques. Tropical Screech-Owl – Megascops choliba. African Scops-Owl – Otus senegalensis. Pacific Screech-Owl – Megascops cooperi.
