Bearing witness to the cyclical fluctuations of the seasons is a boon to the psyche on a level that tends to go unnoticed and unannounced. The often overlooked Cattle Egret has legs that turn bright pink during this brief courtship period. Even species that do not undergo visible changes (to us, at least) begin to behave differently.

This can mean some interesting birding, if you can bear the Shanghai heat … Of course, the egrets and herons described in my last post are still around. Cattle Egret … though some of them seem to want to hide (which is really difficult for a white bird). Some cuckoo species. Brown Shrike. Oriental Magpie-Robin.

Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

Unlike Barred Owls they were accompanied by no great controversy , and unlike Cattle Egrets or Eurasian Collared Doves they didn’t come as an abrupt continent-hopping surprise. But shifting baseline syndrome doesn’t just apply to things that have become diminished.

Coming from Niagara Falls, New York, it also means freezing, bitter cold, watching for imaginary Polar Bears while pretending to walk through an Arctic landscape, and looking for owls. Back in Costa Rica, walks through coffee and fields near the house, and a few other day trips have upped the list to 250 species. White-eyed Vireo! .
