On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year. How’s that for an understatement of the obvious?

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. The Telia Lake.

One of these clades holds a diversity of Old World species in several distinct groups, including an Australasian clade, the green-pigeons, the emerald- and wood-doves, the imperial-pigeons and fruit-doves (favorites of mine), and the subjects of our investigation today, the 15 known members of the Raphini.

They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. The Zapata Swamp, Ciénaga de Zapata , is of course known for the three birds that bear it’s name: the Zapata Rail, the Zapata Wren, and the Zapata Sparrow. I took a brief, wobbly, video of the process.
