The latest edition of the AVMA Guidelines for the Humane Slaughter of Animals builds on the original 2016 version, with sections on fur-bearingspecies and marine animals.
This is a page about Moon Bears. It's supposed to be for kids, but it's actually pretty good for just about anyone that doesn't know much about Moon bears (and other species). Tags: bears. Got this page from pandarazzi on Twitter.
A federal judge on Thursday upheld a 2008 decision to protect polar bears throughout their range as a “threatened” species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The polar bear was the first species added to the Endangered Species List due solely to the threat from global warming.
Therefore, to me it's a slam dunk as to whether trophy hunters should continue to hunt polar bears. If a species' very survival is threatened, then it is impractical to hunt it for mere entertainment. Tags: indigenous hunting canada polar bear trophy hunting endangered species arctic. The load included 173 bear paws, one python skin and the carcass of a pangolin — a type of sticky-tongued, toothless, nocturnal anteater that is a menu item in southern China. Bear paws are also considered a delicacy in southern China where exotic animals are favored by diners despite the impact on populations of endangered species.
That would reflect the number of new species discovered in the Amazon rainforest over the past five years or so, according to scientists. The ornithologists considered plumage, voice, and genetics in making their determinations; birds had to differ from known species in in at least two of those qualities to be considered new.
Every fall weekend bears a bite of bittersweet wonder around here. I finally tracked down Black-bellied Plover , a shorebird species that had been eluding me for the county for years, plus a bonus bird in the form of a very infrequent Forster’s Tern hobnobbing with the usual Caspians.
Moon bears are rare, which makes this all the sadder. I can't read such stuff without being sickened by my species. Tags: taiwan Traditional Chinese Medicine bear bile china asia. Many species seemed to come in threes, and today I shall continue my examination of these. Three species of antshrikes are resident in T&T. Out of the three species of antshrikes described here, only the Great Antshrike seems to be an ardent follower of army ant swarms.
On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. in the evening.
The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.
This may seem like government agency hair-splitting, but the calls needed to be made not to the wildlife division of the wildlife agency, but to the exotic species division of the wildlife agency. The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.
April bears the most fruit for my family tree, including my own bad apple birthday this week. While I didn’t notice any Neotropical migrants this weekend, I was pleased to spot a Tufted Titmouse , a species I tend to miss during winter. Does your family celebrate a lot of April birthdays? The wood-warblers are back!
The Bronx was beset by hordes of Black Squirrels , melanistic members of this common species. This post was first published in February 2009, but we can’t bear hiding something this good in the archives. So black squirrels have never been a surprise to me. Yes, the mythical white squirrel does indeed exist.
Bearing witness to the cyclical fluctuations of the seasons is a boon to the psyche on a level that tends to go unnoticed and unannounced. Even species that do not undergo visible changes (to us, at least) begin to behave differently. We typically celebrate sightings and not a change in air temperature or moisture content.
Scientists are learning, though, exactly how birds in different locations are similar across species. By looking at 782 species of Corvids from across the globe, they were able to ascertain patterns in wing size and shape that varied by the birds’ habitat and migratory habits (or lack thereof).
So here are some numbers: As I write this, on March 24th, my 2022 list includes 239 species, all from within the state of Michoacán. The latest species I picked up is the Spotted Wren , a rather common endemic here that I had somehow managed to not see, until three turned up in my garden this morning.
Perhaps the only thing that works is a calm, quiet mind, one that can rid itself of negative tendrils and generate diamond strength hope to help you see where to go and which bearings to follow. I draw quiet strength and hope from birds. The Blue-black Grassquit singing with each repeated jump on the concrete wall across the street.
This can mean some interesting birding, if you can bear the Shanghai heat … Of course, the egrets and herons described in my last post are still around. Webster`s Dictionary defines Cuculophotobia as “The fear of bird photographers to post cuckoo photos online due to the high likeliness of getting the species assignment wrong.”
It seems almost insulting, sure it allows some insight into the abundance of the particular species in a particular area at a point in time, but all birds are rare and exotic somewhere. Bearing the same designation but actually commonplace is the infrequently encountered Common Pauraque.
Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. Common Redpoll.
Four moments (and species) stand out in my own personal birding renaissance: I put an improvised birdbath in my yard to see if I can get the House Sparrows to stop munching on my lettuce plants, and a stunning Black-vented Oriole arrives to bathe. I start visiting a nearby canyon to see what other species might be around.
Sometimes, they even have the same species… I’m looking at you, House Wren ! While this low-density species may be declining across its wide range, BirdLife International still considers it of Least Concern.
When choosing the top birding area of Serbia for a weekend visit, head for lowlands, Deliblato Sands and Labudovo Okno complex with 250 bird species. Being based on this island for the better part of this year has afforded me the opportunity (for the first time) to bear witness to the movement of bodies through these quarters – and it continues to be exhilarating. So the truth is – I wasn’t really sure if I had seen this species before or not.
In all of North America, only one avian species serves as both the beloved mascot of seven states as well as the totem to two professional sports teams (and an infinity of amateur ones!) However, Cardinalis phoeniceus is a South American species. Rather, this icon is extremely adaptable and eye-catching.
A half-century ago, this species might have been restricted to Iowa or New Jersey, but now it can be found throughout New England and even south-eastern Canada. This native of Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico is now recognized as a separate species, but the two species will hybridize when they meet.
The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area. The raptors of Ruoergai deserve a separate post.
This is my best place to pick up species that inhabit, or visit, the border between the Hot Country thorn forest and highland pine-oak forest habitats. It wasn’t the most colorful species of the day. And how am I doing on my species race for the year? But its rump was somewhat bright, I suppose.
It’s better that the species name, citrea , obviously refers to the French car-manufacturer Citroën, whose automobiles are known to be lemons*. Now back to all the transient species that I can’t bear missing. This is not a bird for cubicle farms! Appropriate! may not be accurate. Proud cavity-owners!

Such is the burden that a digiscoping bird blogger bears when he visits the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida in January. I think that somehow you will manage to survive with just one species of beautifully colored, giant footed, candy-corn-nosed bird. Purple Gallinules are awesome. ……… a.

Sure, it’s entirely possible that there are some superhuman larophiles out there among the uppermost pantheon of elite birders who can identify this gull to species by its shadowy outline. Well, good for them. We’ve got a beer to drink.
Since this little bird spends the summer months in remote, cool boreal habitats that harbor moose, Black Bears, and Canada Jays , one might wonder how Tennessees bide their time in their tropical wintering range. Interestingly enough, another boreal wood-warbler species, the Cape May Warbler , also frequents flowering trees.
The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Louisiana black bear’s threatened status warrants protection under sections 7 and 9 of the Endangered Species Act.
