It is a fascinating world of swampy forests of willow and poplar, inhabited by Black Storks , White-tailed Eagles , Eastern Olivaceous and Icterine Warblers (above), among more than 200 other species. What I have always missed there and what I still miss is to experience presence of the European Beaver. Nevertheless, Nagy was right.

There’s also a much greater variety of species of deer living here now than than there were four or five hundred years ago, for along with our native Roe and Red Deer we also have large populations of Fallow, Sika, Reeves’s Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer. Reeves’s Muntjac , a highly successful invasive species in the UK.

This trip was actually all about photographing the grizzly bears the inhabit the Katmai National Forest, I will not bore you with the flight details, from La Paz, Mexico to Alaska, but it included several planes, one of which was a De Havilland Beaver float plane. Well, I guess I just have to go back! Common Redpoll. Emperor Goose.

Some eager beavers have already broken triple digits for the year while less industrious sorts may not even be in double digits. I enjoyed my first wave of feeder birds for the year, with Tufted Titmouse winning BBOTW honors only because that species appears less frequently than my other local denizens.

I saw a beaver though! The beaver was way over on the other side of the valley we were looking down at. Other than the beaver there wasn’t much to see. I’m not truncating the list: those are the only species that I saw while I waited. It was a long two-plus hours. That was nice. Someone (a guy named Rick?)
