Oh Belize. A beautiful country on Central America’s coast, Belize boasts spectacular diving and snorkeling, immense cave systems, beautiful rivers, dense jungles, and of course, hundreds and hundreds of birds. My husband and I arrived in Belize just after a late afternoon thunderstorm. The birding was relatively easy.

For 13 years, this organization has carried out a bird-a-thon to raise funds for such projects as reforestation in Ecuador and protecting nests of the Harpy Eagle in Brazil. Whatever the reason may be, we do know that Las Brisas provides a lot of food and shelter for Cerulean Warblers as they migrate south.

In Belize I cruised above reefs few people had ever seen. There is no feeling in the world like knowing your helping something you care about, whether its sharks or puffins, protecting forests or reefs, advancing science or communities. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins.

Today, the vast tract of land is protected, managed for science and conservation. At dawn, my feet hit one of the protected beaches with Wendy Allen, the manager of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, one of the science and outreach organizations working within Hobcaw. hours of walking.

Some of you have been counting on federal funding or habitat protection that now looks shaky; some of you have mates who never made it back from migration; some of you just can’t catch enough fish. Once you get back to Belize, you can be yourselves. But I thought you guys would! It’s just for the summer. Of course, this is fiction.

I once visited Crooked Tree in Belize for a few days without hitting any of the great spots because I didn’t really know what I was doing. The reserve protects a stand of mahogany swamp that attracts large numbers of nectar feeding birds when they flower in the winter. This often happens to me, because I’m rather vague.
