Not only did my research show a lot of promising sites to visit, but I also have two good birding friends in the region, Laura and Brad. My sincere apologies.

Chinese Penduline T**s are not particularly woke birds. White’s Thrush is described as “burly” on eBird – not entirely unjustified, I guess, but this description fails to capture the way the intricate patterns of the bird make for great camouflage and also for its own kind of beauty. Maybe the grandparents help.

Incidents include a hippo who died in transport from Denver and a Turkmenian markhor, a species of wild goat, hung itself at the zoo after becoming trapped by a rope. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In April 2009, unseasonably cold weather froze two whopping crane eggs.

Unless you’re in the Great Lakes region you may not see much of these birds in the winter if you’re in the northern US. This is where they are truly effective and amazing hunters.
