On Hokkaido, the number rose from 33 in 1952 to about 1200 now, with the bird presumably benefiting from its symbolic importance for Japanese culture and its pull for tourists. Still, one source states that this is the second-rarest of all crane species. And now for something completely different (Monty Python).
