There are bird feeders and then there are squirrel feeders disguised as bird feeders, a fact known well by those of us who have committed a part of our lives to our yard birds. And, although I grew up in a house with a great yard, my parents were not of the bird-feeding persuasion. At least, feeder birds.

Further on a wire sits a somewhat large-headed small-crow like bird. I am coming closer – the bird is quite tolerant – and taking a few photos. The final site of the day was sewage ponds of the sugar factory by the town of Kovin. Their scientific name is not turtur for nothing. Deliblato Sands. The Danube shallows are waterless.

Britain’s Peregrine population collapsed in the early 1960s, the result of poisoning by organochlorine pesticides that either killed the birds or rendered them infertile. The peregrine’s comeback was due to protection and the birds’ own powers of recovery. It’s easy to explain why these birds seem so fond of cathedrals.

They come here knowing that although the official bird list for Costa Rica is replete with everything from Bonaparte’s Gull to Gray-hooded Gull and Least Tern , if they do any amount of gull watching, they’ll be lucky if they see anything more than Laughing Gulls. You rush over to investigate, and there are birds in your fireplace. Chimney Swifts are remarkable birds who are having a harder and harder time finding brick chimneys in which to nest and raise their families. Old factories and mills are being torn down, and they can’t use house chimneys which have been lined or capped.

Driving north from Belgrade, we had two flocks of Common Cranes , about 100 birds, flying low in formation near the Carska bara Ramsar site – November is the height of their autumn migration. The birds themselves are very unobtrusive and hard to spot, but there is a tell-tale sign: their droppings. Finish with pizza and sljivovica.

The animal rights movement is (rightly) closely associated with protesting things like factory farming, dogfighting, etc…basically, the mistreatment of animals. The birds had evolved without a predator like this, and with the new snake having no predators, it had no problem decimating the island’s birdlife.

Here in the southeast, we get to watch as the flocks of sickle-winged midge tyrants funnel back south again every fall, pausing to congregate most evenings in the old smokestacks that tower above the empty tobacco factories in downtown Durham, North Carolina. It was the largest all-volunteer effort to study a migratory bird ever undertaken.
