Not so much because of the castle — though I remember it being pretty — but because on a low rock wall near where we sat to eat our lunches I spotted a strange little bird, a bit like a nuthatch but largely dark gray with vivid red wing-markings. The undoubted highlight, though, was the trip to Neuschwanstein.

Man in Hummer Squishes Ducklings

In perhaps the ultimate expression of everything that is wrong with American culture, a 19-year-old man in a Humvee intentionally ran over ducklings in a McDonald’s parking lot in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dillon Pearce faces up to four years in prison after being charged with a felony. My money is on him getting off with community service.

A Dietary Alternative for Feral Cats?

Much has been made in these pages about the havoc that feral cats wreak on native birds. An abandoned kitten nicknamed Frankie had staked out a McDonald’s restaurant as its feeding grounds, and for more than a year, subsisted mainly on handouts from employees and customers. No Kea were harmed in the making of this story.

Just had my lifer Cinereous Vulture this morning

Superficially similar but unrelated to New World condors, it is huge, more pterodactyl-like than bird-like. But it’s a huge bird. Stopping for a large cappuccino at a drive-in McDonalds en route, soon I entered a hamlet of a dozen family homes mixed with a dozen small apartment buildings. m (8 ft 2 in – 10 ft 2 in) wingspan.

In defense of county listing

I realize that listing is a reviled in birding culture as it is celebrated, and more listing even more so, but hear me out here. I mean to make the argument that county listing is birding at its most pure, the ultimate combination of the two warring angels that sit upon each one of our shoulders. A fine bird for the county.
