Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. But I have to admit that seeing some of the wolves, foxes, asses, and sheep of Dulan county is nice, at least as long as they do not stand in front of some exciting birds. I guess modern birds think this looks much cooler.
Authorities are concerned that a man spotted wearing a goat outfit and cavorting with actual wild MountainGoats in the mountains of Utah could be in danger when hunting season opens in September. And, no, I am not making this up.
It didn’t take too long for a bird to catch my interest. We were in the mountains! The second life bird of the day, after the Clark’s Nutcracker welcoming committee , was Cassin’s Finch in the form of a small flock that flew over that sounded different than Purple Finches.
I was fortunate enough to stay in a cabin with extensive and thoughtful landscaping, so merely sitting on the porch with my coffee in the morning netted birds like Rufous and Calliope Hummingbird , Western Tanager , and even a conveniently calling Pacific Slope Flycatcher in the distance. Now, none of these are great rarities.
With the lockdown lasting until the end of May (ironically thus pretty much including the whole spring migration – the divine sense of humor is a rather malign one, I am afraid), June still had the freedom of birding anywhere in Shanghai, not just inside a smallish compound. Accessorizing for birds.
As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven. We picked this as much for the location as its chance for some decent birds. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves.
“A reading of recent research shows that Australian birds are more likely than most to eat sweet foods, live in complex societies, lead long lives, attack other birds, and be intelligent and loud.” When going to Australia, one of the two birds I wanted to see most was the Tawny Frogmouth.
I’ve decided to get into the bird tour business. Get up early, point at lots of birds, go back to the hotel for celebratory wine. If any birds give trouble just make up an answer, then say it with confidence. Guaranteed to produce birds you’ve never seen before or your money back! I mean, how hard could it be?
To be precise, “Birding Shanghai from June 10 to June 30, 2022” – but that is even less of an exciting title than the one above. The reason for this post only covering the period from June 10 being that an earlier post, “Revenge Birding”, was about the first 9 days of June. You should try it too.
