In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct. By tagging the Parrot and monitoring the area with remote cameras, scientists hope to learn more about this species and how to keep it safe.

I contemplated how the birds were able to achieve such acceleration after sleeping all night without an ounce of caffeine. Once the swifts ascended well above the canopy, they began to look like birds again. Meanwhile, the forest edge was awash with birds. The birds were for the most part playing hard to get, though.

Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing.

I recently asked whether Puerto Rico should be part of the American Birding Association’s ABA Area. Both Puerto Rico and the USVI have active birding communities that are currently excluded from full membership in the ABA family. The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation.

During our three week visit to Singapore in March we spent a good part of each day walking and birding. By 17th March we were not expecting to find too many more new birds to add to our list. We were then able to walk down Upper Thomson Road and get public transport back to our hotel. Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot.
