Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. So, just photos of the birds themselves. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

I’m at a yearly disadvantage when it comes to deciding my Best Bird of the Year (BBOY) here on 10,000 Birds. Borneo did turn up some great birds, as expected, but it still turned out to be quite hard to pick a winner. Birding best bird of the year Borneo storks' In fact, I can often guarantee it.

What with all the excitement, The Management forgot to call up the beats for their Best Bird of The Year ! This year however, The Menacement were chalking up ticks that are likely to be included on shortlists as Best Bird of Life. As usual, my choice is not necessarily a rare bird, my thrill comes from seeing a bird well.
