Maybe this Daisy character that I live with and who is mother to Desi is not the mean ol’ bird-hater that I have made her out to be. when the puffin flew past, a bird that the whole family can appreciate.

Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

Kinabatangan – Borneo’s Mighty River

The lodge is unusual in having a raised walkway behind the lodge, allowing those of us keen to bird or watch wildlife when most normal people are resting in the middle of the day. The birding was pretty ace too. This species was my bird of the year last year. A Rhinoceros Hornbill ! What a bird!

Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. Fish & Wildlife Service has a web page for this species – but it contains absolutely no information.
