In truly absurd, I am not making this up news, villagers in Turkey recently accused a bird of being an Israeli spy. The bird in question, a Kestrel (its species wasn’t named), drew the attention of folks in Altinayva, Turkey because of the metal band upon its leg. But alas, my comedic skills are subpar.
Fortunately for birdwatchers, many of these birds like to sit on the power and other lines, of which sometimes curiously three or four run in parallel. I am not sure what the birds were congregating for where I took these photos. Little Owls have a somewhat less interesting diet consisting of insects, small mammals, and birds.
If a blustery, snowy afternoon isn’t custom-made for catching up on bird news, then I don’t know what is. Better to get current on what’s happening with the rest of the bird world. To that end: More caterpillars = less reason to stray? International Bird Rescue has more on how to help.). Sorry, couldn’t resist.).
Such was the sad fate of a New York City veterinarian who refused to release a stray cat she treated back to a feral cat freak who planned to release the cat back into a feral cat colony. Hat-tip to 10,000 Birds reader Ben. She was cyber-bullied, her business was destroyed, and she took her own life. Rest in peace, Dr. Shirley Koshi.
Very occasionally though, one might stray down the eastern seaboard of the USA, but for the most part, those that breed in arctic Canada migrate towards Europe and swell numbers there during the winter. The seaweed, in its turn attracts insects and thus birds. The faint scalloping on the back suggests that it is a young bird.
It is also a good description of the birding in southernmost Florida. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here. A cool climate on one side and wide expanses of water on the others creates isolation as many temperate land bird species seem unable to colonize areas south of Lake Okeechobee.
Instead of going on about zip lines and other modern, adventure tourism attractions, the birding crowd talks about taking photos of Resplendent Quetzals , seeing dozens of hummingbird species, and the seemingly odd absence of raptors in Costa Rica but nope, we don’t really talk about extinction. Must be a joke, right?
It goes after the falling fish… …almost… …but no, the older eagle misses the fish, which falls to the ground, to make some stray cat a very happy cat. Birds eagles Europe Serbia wetlands' Photos (c) Slobodan Panjkovic.
For many in the birding community, Miami is a destination meant only for ticking off ABA-countable exotics such as Spot-breasted Oriole or Red-whiskered Bulbul. It was truly heart-warming to see the local birding community participate with so much enthusiasm and fervor. This bird was a life bird for him!
Let’s say you’re a bird wrapping up your breeding season in the north of Scotland—where do your thoughts turn when winter beckons? The researchers theorize that these birds might not be strays from the Scandinavian Phalarope population, but instead perhaps originally from North America.
Lake Kerkini National Park in the north of Greece is the very best birding area in the Balkan Peninsula and definitely among the top ten hotspots of Europe. Some 320 species have been recorded here, and in springtime it is possible to observe more than 150 bird species in a week. The lake lies at a mere 35 m / 115 ft a.s.l.
And Peter, who loves wildlife, has saved hundreds – if not thousands – of birds and small animals from being killed by two more feral cats. Peter, who loves cats, has saved two of them from the normally short and brutal life of a feral cat. I can hear it already: I want to be involved in saving cats, but not that involved.
This bird cannot resist a good ‘pish’ and was always the first to show when I tried to attract a passing party. Endemic to the Mexican mountains between 1800 and 3000 meters, the Red Warbler is a common and confiding bird of mixed pine and oak, or fir forests. First up we have the Red Warbler. Is nowhere safe?
As far as right now, the first report of a Calliope Hummingbird from the local bird mailing list came in on April 22. It certainly drew plenty of feeder birds over the winter. When I was young, it was the only western hummer to routinely stray east in the winter months. The ways of birds are mysterious.
I don’t expect to enjoy much birding this weekend, since the Rochester International Jazz Festival is rolling into town. Corey, of course, maintains an unswerving commitment to birding and will likely comb the coast of the NYC archipelago for stray shorebirds and vagrant albatrosses. How about you?
The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. The post Woodland for sale appeared first on 10,000 Birds. After a lot of backing and forthing, the vendor accepted our offer and the wood is to become a trust to be protected in perpetuity.
November and early December can be a frustrating time here at Nanhui – on the one hand, there are fewer and fewer birds as migration slows down. On the other hand, it seems there is a better chance of getting some strays and really rare birds, such as the Ryukyu Minivet described in my last post.
By Clive Finlayson Growing up in Gibraltar, it is impossible not to notice large birds of prey, in the thousands, overhead. That, and his father’s influence, got Clive hooked on birds from a very young age. Pu blishing papers, articles, and books on birds aside, Clive is also a keen bird photographer.
Proposal 2013-A-6 would split the shearwater taxon baroli , which breeds on several Atlantic island groups (the Azores, Canaries, Selvages, and Madeira) and strays to North American waters, from its current position as part of the Little Shearwater ( Puffinus assimilis ) complex. Shearwater split. lherminieri ). Let the hyphen wars begin!)
In each instance they start with a striking anecdote — my particular favorite took place on the University of Montana campus, where in 1964 an American Crow learned to call and taunt stray dogs into causing perhaps the most adorable college riots of the decade.
One of the joys of going home to my parent’s house in the UK is the array of bird feeders outside their kitchen. Being the only house in quite a large area gives them a great catchment area to draw birds from, and turns up more than the occasional rarity. I don’t feed birds much here in New Zealand. Kaka love apples.
Fortunately, I am talking about Tree Swallows battling for nest boxes at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: if this post were about people I probably would have taken a stray bullet trying to report the story, at least, I would have if people fought over housing like Tree Swallows do! This post has been submitted to Bird Photography Weekly #34.
Monk Parakeets , of course, have managed a beakhold in several cities across the continent , and Florida mantains a menagerie of Psitticids though it’s sort of unclear how many of them are self-sustaining and how many are sustained only by a constant seeding of escaped cage birds and smuggler’s losses. Because they are loud.
Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani ) is a widespread and ubiquitous bird in disturbed grassy areas throughout much of the neotropics, including most of the Caribbean Islands. Incredibly social, Smooth-billed Anis form monogamous pairs that build a communal nest where all birds share in the responsibilities of feeding and tending to the young.
This is a shame, because were the text less verbose, I could see the book appealing to a younger audience with more patience for the basic, the obvious, and the odd passage of imaginary dialogue between birds. This is a pretty good model of the modern environmental ethic of self-restraint and respectful watching.
There are always stray cattle to watch out for, but we prefer to minimize the risk of hitting animals by leaving on road trips until a couple of hours after sunrise. They numbered in excess of 750 individual birds and that is a conservative estimate. The post A huge gathering of Galahs appeared first on 10,000 Birds.
And since I suspect there may be others out there who, like I, feel something of a personal connection with 10,000 Birds’ regular writers, I feel the need to explain my absence. Now, all of this should not have kept me from seeing, and reporting on, some cool Mediterranean birds. In fact, I have not formally gone birding, at all.
Though Red-necked Grebes are around in small numbers each winter in New York City and Long Island they generally aren’t a terribly cooperative bird: even last winter when large numbers came south because they were frozen out up north the best looks I managed were of relatively distant birds. Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena.
Well, the American Birding Association’s Bird of the Year — the Evening Grosbeak – deserves no less. Before we dive in, just take a moment to admire this incredible bird. For centuries, many birds were assigned to these families based primarily on their bill structures. But what is a finch? But not all.
Since I have started to bird by kayak, it took me a lot of time to realise that paddling is not the synonym for birding and that I can bird without a paddle, although I cannot paddle without a pair of binoculars. Which birds can be seen there? But, more than just quantity, this spot offers some quality birding, too.
Although it was nothing like going from New York to California or even Buffalo, New York to North Carolina, a change of location, however slight, can bring new birds especially in Costa Rica. In typical blackbird fashion, this common garden bird gave occasional, loud, ringing calls. Right at home. These were. Great Kiskadee.
As the story goes, way back in the late 19th Century and organization called the American Acclimitazation Society was working hard to introduce every one of the 600 species of birds mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays to North America. They’re resilient and brash, resourceful and intelligent. Plus, they’re sort of ugly.
From Terry Tempest William’s 1992 bombshell Refuge to Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 blockbuster Wild (now a major-ish motion picture!) Lanham is also an activist on the topic of getting more diversity into the birding community: you can see a video of his work here. the hits keep coming. Drew Lanham. 24.00, Milkweed Press.
Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit.
If there’s one common theme to this week’s bird news items, it’s their collective bizarreness: The eagle has landed—on the drone, as France trains birds to take out drones that stray into restricted airspace. Scientists ponder the feasibility of genetically engineering chickens to lay the eggs of endangered bird species.
This is interesting to me because researchers recently determined that the spectacular (and spectacularly demolished) Hawaiian honeycreeper radiation arose from stray Eurasian rosefinches that found their way to the emerging archipelago long ago. This needs to change — Carduelinae needs to be split apart; John Boyd shows us how.
I sought further advice via Twitter from a couple of locals that helped consolidate my thoughts, this trip I would aim to cover some of the sites that looked best for waders in the hope of picking up something that may have strayed across the Atlantic.
There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. Arriving at the colony the head lights go off and we move into position below the birds (trying not to fall over the cliffs and into the sea) coordinating everyone by radio.
No Snow Geese or swans yet, and no Sandhill Cranes , but it did renew my taste for some of the simpler, homier pleasures of birding. With all my traipsing about this year I’ve actually been shamefully lax on birding Montana. It’s not only the big, predatory birds that I have to look forward to.
I have been challenged over the few weeks we have been in Palmerston i n the Northern Territory by a little bird that has been making itself hard to photograph. This little bird is a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin and it is a good example how a few colours can make for a beautiful little bird. Chestnut-breasted Mannikins.
They had been the species I’ve most wanted to see, above any bird or fish or mammal, for many years, and they didn’t remotely disappoint. It wasn’t massively easy to bird this park, at least not as a volunteer. But despite this, I did see birds. A pair of last year’s puppies playing with an old skin.
Now that I have added ten more birds to my Queens life list we must revisit the list and predict my next ten birds in Queens (and see how my last set of predictions turned out). Birds with asteriks are birds from the first list that I saw by the time I made the second list. Yes, it is that time again! Read on to find out!
Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird! Really well.
It is a common bird of humid, lowland forest in Central and South America where it is usually found in the lower storey. rufifrons occasionally strays to southern Texas or Arizona, but on the whole, they are seldom seen north of the border. The Argentinian birds come from the B.c. The Rufous-capped Warbler, B.
