Oriental Scops Owls are quite possibly my favorite bird at Nanhui. Bird-shaped cuteness. The Relict Gull is listed as vulnerable – apparently, it is one of the scarcest of gulls with a global population estimated at 10,000–20,000 mature individuals and up to 30,000 birds. Estren, a Ph.D. Do you agree? It is beautiful, too.

In fact, so large and abundant is it, that French hunters often cross La Manche to shoot birds in Kent and no-one seems to mind.The only other likely Columbidae would be the Eurasian Collared Dove and European Turtle Dove. It can be seen anywhere there are trees or meadows.

I don’t get a lot of life birds in North America any more, but this confiding little gent offered himself up to the list: a Florida Scrub-Jay. What an oddly proportioned bird!

Summer Books for Kids (and the rest of us)

I enjoy collecting children’s books about birds and nature that I come across in the expected (book stores) and unexpected (academic library conference reports) places. The Taínos named the birds Iguacas, after their call. Spanish settlers arrived in 1493 and called the birds Coterras. The birds thrive.
